Nevada Regional Medical Center (NRMC) Foundation recently donated more than $6700 to purchase three new BRODA chairs for use at Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center (BACC). BRODA chairs are specially designed to allow for fully customized positioning, with multiple combinations of tilt and recline.

Prior to 2018, there were a few residents at Barone that needed to be restrained, and connected to many personal alarms to help keep them safe at all times. The BACC team worked diligently to problem-solve to improve quality of life for their residents and one solution included leasing the BRODA chairs. The chairs resulted in greatly increased security as well as dignity for the residents, allowing BACC to eliminate personal alarms, decrease use of psychoactive medications and eliminate pressure-related skin issues.

“One resident in particular, we knew needed to be the first client to be able to use the BRODA chair,” said Melissa Cornell, administrator at BACC. “She was not able to sit up straight on her own and was basically limited to looking at the floor. That’s no way to live. Once she got in the BRODA chair she was able to sit up and see everything around her. Now everyone can see, she has the most beautiful blue eyes!”

Cornell knew the BRODA chairs should become a permanent solution, and that purchasing the chairs would be much more economical than leasing them over time. She looked to the NRMC Foundation for help with funding.

“Several donors have designated Barone as the recipient of their gifts over the years,” said Seth Barrett, NRMC Foundation Board Chairperson. “We were happy to be able to use those gifts to provide these chairs and improve the lives of residents at Barone. That’s what the Foundation is here for.”

The Foundation raises funds to help support patient care across the NRMC system including its rural health clinics and long-term care facilities. Throughout the year, fundraising events include the Caring with Pride Golf Classic, Designer Purse Bingo, Foundation Gala, and Tree of Shining Memories.
