NRMC Offers Digital Mammography

One out of eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime – this means one new diagnosis every 2 minutes. Nevada Regional Medical Center remains committed to the fight against breast cancer and is pleased to offer state-of-the-art digital mammography. This advanced imaging technology aids in the early detection of breast cancer.

A digital mammogram is similar to a standard mammogram in that x-rays are used to produce an image of your breast. The difference is in the way the image is processed. Standard mammograms are processed on sheets of radiographic film and viewed by a radiologist using a "light box." Digital mammograms are recorded and stored on a computer. After the exam, the doctor can examine the image on a computer screen, adjusting the size, orientation, brightness and contrast to see certain areas more clearly. The ability to manipulate images is one of the main benefits of digital mammography. Another is that fewer repeat images may be needed, reducing exposure to radiation. Digital images are easily stored and can be transferred electronically, eliminating the need for film archives.

Nevada Regional also utilizes Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) software. This software reviews the images marking any breast abnormalities. This directs the radiologist to any possible areas of concern.

From the patient’s perspective, a digital mammogram feels the same; however, exam times are often faster.

“We are pleased to offer the women in our area this advanced technology. Early detection is key in the treatment of breast cancer,” said Gary Headrick, Director of Diagnostic Imaging.

The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women beginning at age 40 – earlier if there is a family history of the disease. For more information or to schedule your annual mammogram, please call (417) 448-3713.
