Community Education Classes & Programs

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP - Support group and discussion meeting for family members and caregivers of those with Alzheimer's Disease or related disorders. Meetings are held from 4 to 5 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month at the Moore-Few Community Room (enter from the south parking lot) 901 S. Adams Street, Nevada. The group's purpose will be to offer peer support, problem-solving discussions and information about local resources. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information and directions call Barone Alzheimer's Care Center at 417-448-3999. This group is affiliated with the Alzheimer's Association, Southwest Missouri Chapter. (Respite care is not available)
ARTHRITIS & FIBROMYALGIA SELF HELP GROUP – This group will teach participants how to gain control of their arthritis & fibromyalgia by using pain management techniques, exercise, relaxation, strengthening exercises, & healthy eating by incorporating an action plan. Class fee is $15, includes the “Arthritis Help Book.” Class is led by certified instructors.
ASK THE DOC- A variety of topics are discussed & presented by a health care professional. Come & ask the doctor your health related questions. The program is free, participants may bring their lunch to the presentation. Registration is required.
CANCER SUPPORT GROUP – This cancer support system is for people currently receiving cancer treatment or for cancer survivors who can give hope and optimism for those in need. Family members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please come, talk, listen, give & gain useful information with others. Call for more information.
CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP - Caring for the caregiver. If you are interested in meeting with this group please call Melanie Hackney at 667-5893, Vernon County Senior Center or call Susie Bernhardt, 448-3686, Nevada Regional Medical Center. Respite care may be available for your loved one during the group.
CHILD BIRTH CLASS - Intended for women in the last trimester of pregnancy. It is important to attend the entire six-week series to get the most benefit for you and your baby. Child Birth Classes are held from 6-8 pm in the NRMC Mezzanine Conference Room, free of charge.
DAY CARE PROVIDER’S EDUCATION – Educational credits are offered to assist licensed day care providers obtain their required class time annually. Class is offered the fourth Monday of the month, January thru October, 6:30-8:30 pm. No charge to attend.
DIABETIC EDUCATION - Educational class for person diagnosed with diabetes. Class is lead by Nancy Pitts, RN, Diabetic Educator. All participants must have a doctor’s referral to attend. Register by calling 667-3355 extension 3645 or ext. 3825. Class runs in a 4 week session.
FREEDOM FROM SMOKING – The American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking Course teaches a variety of different techniques to help individuals quit smoking. Lifestyle modification is the key to the course.
BROWN BAG LUNCH & LEARN – A variety of topics are discussed & presented by a health care professional . The program is free, participants may bring their lunch to the presentation. Registration is required.
INFANT/CHILD CPR - Parents & Caregivers can learn how to perform CPR on an infant or small child. No charge to attend. Registration is required.
INFANT MASSAGE - Parents will learn the benefits of and how to help soothe their little one through infant massage. The class emphasizes how to build a positive bond with the baby. A FREE Infant Massage Kit is given to all infants who attend the class. The class, free to parents and caregivers, Call for class time.
LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER – A free program provided by the American Cancer Society for women who are currently receiving active cancer treatment. Women learn how to deal with skin changes & hair loss. Free cosmetic kits are given to each woman. Wigs and turbans are also available free of charge. Private sessions also offered. Call for more information.
MOM’S GROUP - Designed for women who are currently breastfeeding or who are pregnant and want more information about breastfeeding. Call for more information.
OPEN AIRWAYS – Asthma education program for elementary children. Classes are conducted at area elementary schools. A is for Asthma is also available for preschool children. Call for more information.
PACE AQUATICS – This warm water class is designed for people with arthritis to help improve their mobility. Participants do not need to be swimmers to join. Class meets Tuesdays & Thursdays, noon-12:45 pm, Walton Pool.
PACE - “PACE” (an acronym for "People with Arthritis Can Exercise") is an exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis. This properly designed exercise program will help participants keep their joints flexible, maintain muscle strength, and build overall stamina. PACE meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10-11 am in the MFCC Community Room. Class fee is $10 for 2 month session.
SIBLING CELEBRATION - Designed for children 2-6 years. Helps children celebrate becoming a big brother or big sister. Class includes a tour of the OB department. The class meets in the Medical Arts Conference Room, free of charge.
TAI CHI FOR ARTHRITIS - This exercise class helps people gain balance and mobility while participating in a form of stress reduction exercise. Class fee is $10 for seven week session, held in the 3rd Floor Classroom.
OPERATION FIT KIDS - is a program designed to help children learn how to live healthy lifestyles & have fun while doing it. Class is for children 6-11 years old. Tips and fun activities offered to families to help focus on attaining a healthy lifestyle for children. Class meets at the YMCA. Class time varies. Class fee is $15.
