NRMC to Host Presentation on Celiac Disease
Have you heard of Celiac Disease? Celiac affects more people than Crohn’s, Cystic Fibrosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s combined. Yet, 97% of people with Celiac disease go undiagnosed.
Celiac Disease is one of the most common genetic conditions in the world. Celiac is activated by eating gluten-proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley. It is classified as both an autoimmune disorder, because the body is damaged by its own immune system, and a disease of mal-absorption, since the body cannot absorb the nutrients it needs to function properly. Celiac affects 1 out of 33 people in the United States with onset occurring at any time in a person’s life.
Nevada Regional Medical Center’s Registered Dietician, Janeane Myhre, will present on this topic Thursday, November 10th from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Mezzanine Conference Room. Anyone living with Celiac Disease is encouraged to attend and participate. Janeane will educate on what the disease is and how to cope with it. Current disease sufferers have been invited to share their tips to living with Celiac and recipes for a gluten-free diet. To attend the presentation and learn more, register by 417-448-3622. |
