Nevada has been very fortunate to receive the services of Meals on Wheels, a non-profit organization. Meals are available for those in the immediate Nevada area who are elderly, disabled, homebound, diabetic or are referred by their physician for medical reasons. A physician’s referral is preferred, but not required. The Meals on Wheels program receives no federal funding. It operates with funds from the United Way, external donations and at the time and expense of its volunteers.
Meals on Wheels currently serves 50-60 meals per week. Volunteers deliver one meal to each client five days a week, rain or shine and on holidays. Meals are also delivered to the Neighbor’s Center.
Meals on Wheels President Christen Diehl is proud to report that they have never missed delivering a meal. “We deliver in the worst of conditions and even during the holidays.”
The cost of the meals is $3.00 and each includes a meat, starch, vegetable, fruit and a carton of milk. The meals are prepared by Nevada Regional Medical Center. Meals for special diets such as low sodium or reduced calorie are also provided.
Meals on Wheels is a service to provide nourishment but often relationships develop between the volunteers and clients. Many times, the only faces clients see are those of their Meals on Wheels volunteers.
Currently, Meals on Wheels has approximately 70 volunteers, but volunteers are always needed. For more information about Meals on Wheels or to volunteer, call Christen Diehl at (417) 448-1785. To make a donation, please contact Linda Chesnut at (417) 448-1144.
