A Look at 2011 with Nevada Regional Medical Center

“The last year has been a busy but successful year for us. We are climbing a mountain one step at a time,” stated Judy Feuquay, President and CEO at Nevada Regional Medical Center.

Over the last couple of years, the city-owned, non-profit hospital in Nevada has had some difficult obstacles to overcome. They reported a $2M deficit in their last fiscal year end, had a small round of lay-offs and have been undergoing numerous, expensive, government mandates within healthcare reform.

“The climate of the economy has certainly not been an easy one to work in but, we have handled ourselves well during tough times,” said Feuquay.

The hospital attributes some of its financial turn-around to investments in physicians and services. They helped their neighbor, Nevada Medical Clinic, recruit 3 new physicians to Nevada. Drs. Ryan Harrison and Cameron Crymes are providing family practice with obstetrics at the clinic and Dr. Kristi Foster-Crymes offers family practice. Dr. Marcus Wade joined NRMC offering Radiology services and they recruited 2 more visiting physicians to their Specialty Clinic. Dr. Nathan Box provides Ear, Nose and Throat services and Dr. Kent Cooper joined Dr. Chris Andrew in providing Neurology services.

Additionally, NRMC has opened 2 new behavioral health services over the last year: the outpatient Mental Health Clinic and the inpatient Senior Behavioral Health unit. And they upgraded their MRI machine to a greater field strength magnet that provides faster scans with improved images.

“I want to express the value of the contributions from our hard-working Foundation and Auxiliary members. Our Foundation donated over $50,000 to the hospital in the last year and the Auxiliary over $40,000. With their help we were able to enhance an existing service and start a new one,” said Feuquay.

The NRMC Foundation purchased 2 new all wheel drive SUVs for the Home Health and Hospice department. This was to ensure the staff could make it to patient’s homes in any weather. And the Auxiliary donated funds to purchase a new VNUS machine. This is a new service to the hospital allowing the surgeon, Dr. Joe Dodd to ablate painful varicose veins and help patients restore circulation in their legs.

NRMC not only invests in equipment and medical services, they invest in their community and employees. The hospital’s economic impact in one year exceeds $114M. They invest $1.4M in the community for healthfairs, free screenings, donations, and charitable care. And recently they invested over $100,000 in bonuses for the staff.

“As a non-profit organization, the stronger we are, the stronger the community will be. We do not strive to exceed bottom lines to pay shareholders. The more money we make, the more money we are able to invest in our workforce and in better healthcare for our community,” touted Feuquay. “We cannot attribute success to much more than very hard work on the part of many. And it’s not going to let up. We have determined our resolutions for the New Year and we will work hard to achieve them.”

The NRMC stated resolutions are:
    1. Recruitment of a 2nd general surgeon
    2. Renovation of the General-Adult Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit
    3. Exceed patient expectations for their care

“We need to add another general surgeon to both meet the demand and enhance what we do here. We’re renovating the behavioral health unit because it needs it and because we have such a lovely new unit on the senior side and felt they needed to match. And we have embarked on a partnership with the Studer Group to help us improve our work environment and explore what our patients want from us and then, give it to them! We’re most excited about this adventure because it will impact and improve many aspects of our business. We hope to make NRMC the hospital of choice for our employees and patients,” exclaimed Feuquay.
